C 3309
Crossing Riparia & Rupestris.
Medium vigorous rootstock.
Adaptability to various soil types.
Recommended for fresh fertile and well-drained soils.
Widely used in northern grape growing regions where early fruit setting is desired. Appreciated for quality wine production.
Lime tolerance is medium, approximately 11%.
Not recommended for dry growing aeries nor wet soils, high acid soils, soils with high salt content.
C 101-14
Crossing Riparia & Rupestris.
Same family as C 3309 but less vigor.
Problems with grafting affinity to some Vinifera varieties.
Can have negative results in compatibility of rootstock and scion wood after vineyard is established.
Some problems are recorded with nutrition transport to the scion.
Not recommended for wide vine spacing and high production.
Rootstock Varieties
5BB
Crossing Berlandieri & Riparia.
Vigorous rootstock for northern growing regions.
Adapts will to humid and compact clay soils.
Relative short growing cycle.
Its vigor can become a handicap for fruit setting on sensitive varieties.
Tolerates up to 20% active lime.
Recommended for wide row spacing, low vigor soils, low vigor varieties, etc.
Not recommended for hot dry soils.
SO4
Crossing Berlandieri & Riparia
Medium vigorous rootstock. Believed to be somewhat more vigorous then 3309.
Adapts very well to different soil types but shows best results on well-drained, humid, rich soils.
One of the most widely grafted rootstock for cool climate grape growing regions and modern viticulture practices.
Advances fructification and longevity of vineyards.
Early ripening.
Resistant to phylloxera and nematodes.
Tolerates up to 18% active lime.
Riparia Gloire
Vitis Riparia
One of the first phylloxera resistant rootstock.
Slow vigorous rootstock
Advances early maturity
Needs deep fertile, humid soil
Delays fruit production on new vineyard side.
Cannot tolerate active lime.
Stay away from shallow soils.
Not recommended for slow vigor varieties, wide wine and row spacing, high production.
Riparia Gloire is more and more replaced by its crossings to Berlandieri and Rupestris.
41B
Crossing Chasselas & Berlandieri
Specialty rootstock for soils with high active lime content.
Medium vigor, high fructification.
Sensitive to poorly drained soils and high salt contend.
Somewhat drought resistant
